Teacher Certification Program

The NAPCIS Teacher Certification Program
The NAPCIS TCP is a program for certifying Catholic educators currently working in NAPCIS member schools. Candidates for participation in the Teacher Certification Program profess and practice the Catholic faith, have obtained a college degree, currently teach in a NAPCIS member school, are sponsored in the program by their local administrator, have a local or NAPCIS-based mentor paired with them for the duration of the program, and aspire to perfect their practice of the principles of educational professionalism that are outlined in the NAPCIS Standards of Excellence for Teachers. The NAPCIS TCP is a two-year in-house program of study, mentor-based apprenticeship, practice and evaluation that leads to the NAPCIS Plenary Teachers Certificate.
The TCP curriculum follows the NAPCIS Standards of Excellence for Teachers:
- A study of the principles of Catholic education.
- A study of the essential truths of the Catholic faith and moral life.
- A study of the principles of professionalism and responsibility.
- A study of the proven methods of teaching and evaluating students.
- A study of the proven methods of mentoring and motivating.
- A study of the principles of classroom management and discipline.
The TCP curriculum is covered over the course of the first academic year. It is implemented through an in-house mentoring routine supervised by the school administrator and a special mentor assigned to the teacher. NAPCIS staff is available to participate as long distance mentors, on a space-available basis, as needed.
The mentor and administrator will guide the teacher through the TCP curriculum outline and the corresponding readings contained in the TCP manual and bibliography. They will also be available for informal, timely discussions as particular circumstances warrant. The program has monthly goals, which are considered usually in two one-and-a-half hour sessions per month.
Upon completion of the year of formation-on-faculty, the mentor and school administrator may recommend the teacher for provisional certification. Following the format provided by NAPCIS, they would draft recommendations and commendations for the teacher. The teacher then performs the NAPCIS certification examination. The recommendation by the local administrator and mentor and the certification examination are then submitted to NAPCIS for review by the NAPCIS Teacher Certification Committee. Upon successful completion of that review, the teacher is awarded the Provisional Teacher's Certificate. After a second year of teaching experience in a NAPCIS school, a further review is prepared by the administrator and submitted to NAPCIS in consideration for the Plenary Teacher's Certificate. After successful completion of five years teaching experience, the plenary teacher may be recommended for the Certificate of Master Teacher.
The TCP Two-Year Plenary Certificate Program
The program for attaining the NAPCIS Plenary Teachers Certificate, with fees totaling $300.00, involves:
- the completion of the TCP application,
- the submission of the fees,
- the assignment of a local or NAPCIS-based mentor,
- the thorough one-year study of the NAPCIS TCP materials according to the syllabus and schedule agreed upon by NAPCIS, the local school and the teacher (generally two meetings per month),
- Mid- and End-of-the-year reviews and written evaluations of the teachers progress in the program and application thereof in the professional workplace,
- the successful completion of the NAPCIS TCP Examination (open book) at the end of year one.
Upon the successful completion of the first year in the program and positive evaluation by the NAPCIS Teacher Certification Committee, the candidate will receive the NAPCIS Provisional Teachers Certificate. This certificate will be presented to the sponsoring school for their conferral of the certificate to the teacher.
- the successful completion of the individualized program for maintenance and development based on the previous years recommendations and commendations,
- the submission of the final recommendation for Plenary Certification by the local administrator and mentor, including the final review and evaluation from two in-class observations.
Upon the successful completion of the program and positive evaluation by the NAPCIS Teacher Certification Committee, the candidate will receive the NAPCIS Plenary Teachers Certificate. This certificate will be presented to the sponsoring school for their conferral of the certificate to the teacher.
The Certificate of Master Teacher
After a period of five years of successful teaching in the NAPCIS member school, the teacher holding the Plenary Teachers Certificate may be sponsored by his school and apply for the Certificate of Master Teacher.
Experienced faculty may also directly apply for recognition by NAPCIS as qualifying for the Certificate of Master Teacher. These teachers must complete the certification application and essay, be sponsored by their member school, submit three letters of recommendation and the $200.00 certification fees, as well as successfully complete the certification examination.
Formation for the Whole Faculty
All of the topics covered in the TCP curriculum are very beneficial for the faculty and staff in NAPCIS member schools. If only some of a school's teaching staff register for teacher certification, the program itself may be shared with the entire faculty through in service and teacher meetings. Furthermore, NAPCIS staff is available to conduct onsite teacher in services. The in service consultation is available to non-NAPCIS member schools as well. If desired, the materials for the TCP may be purchased separately for $125.00.

Good have the following characteristics that qualify them for certification upon the completion of the NAPCIS certification program and the recommendation of their mentor, their administrator and their NAPCIS professional:
Good teachers possess a gift for communicating and explaining their subject. They have the ability to coach and inspire students to use, possess and master the material before them.
Good teachers are prepared through the successful and complete study of the subjects they are to teach.
Good Teachers are docile to the direction of mentors and administrators. They learn and follow the educational tradition practiced at the school in which they reside. They learn and implement both the philosophy of Catholic education and the practical techniques of the art of teaching. Furthermore, they desire to lead students to Christian, intellectual and moral perfection.
The Catholic Educational Tradition
NAPCIS recognizes that in the great tradition of Catholic education there are numerous approaches for effective teaching. The Dominicans, the Jesuits, and the Christian Brothers, to name a few, have successfully formed countless students throughout the ages. In our day and age, each private school has its own approach to teaching, and each school has its variation of curriculum and method. In the NAPCIS Teacher Certification Program, that which is distinctively Catholic is required matter for mastery, but the various traditional approaches to teaching is fully at the discretion of the local school. Catholic principles are defined for each of the five categories in the NAPCIS Standards of Excellence for Teachers. Practical implementation of these principles is suggested by NAPCIS and turned over to the local school for final determination.
Eventually, NAPCIS plans to expand the program to provisionally certify young men and women graduating from college. Imagine this: college graduates directed to schools who are masters of their subject(s) and prepared for teaching.
